28/400, 28/410, 28/415: what the numbers on a bottle neck mean
Diameter, thread finish, how to measure your bottle, and which of our sprayers and pumps fit each finish.

The neck finish decides which closure fits. Here is how to read it, how to measure it, and which of our sprayers and pumps fit each one.
01 · The two numbers
A neck finish like 28/410 has two parts. The first number is the outer diameter of the bottle neck thread in millimetres: 28 mm. The second is the thread finish code from the GPI/SPI system used by bottle and closure makers worldwide: it describes the thread style and how tall the neck is. Two bottles can both be 28 mm and still need different closures if the second number differs.
02 · 400, 410, 415: thread height
- 400: one thread turn, short neck. Common on wide-mouth and screw-cap bottles.
- 410: one and a half thread turns, taller neck. The most common finish for trigger sprayers, lotion pumps and mist sprayers, because the taller skirt gives the closure more grip.
- 415: two thread turns, tall neck. Used where a deep closure is needed.
Our standard closure for trigger sprayers is 28/410. 28/400 and 28/415 use a different closure part. Lotion pumps come in 24/410, 24/415, 28/400, 28/410 and 28/415; mist sprayers from 18/410 to 28/410; mini triggers in 20/410, 24/410, 24/415 and 28/410.
03 · How to measure your bottle
Measure T, the outer diameter across the thread, with a calliper: 27.1 to 27.6 mm means a 28 mm finish. Then count the thread turns and measure H, the height from the top of the neck to the shoulder where the closure skirt would sit. One turn and a short neck (about 10 mm) is 400, one and a half turns (about 18 mm) is 410, two turns (about 27.5 mm) is 415.
| Finish | T, thread outer diameter | Thread turns | Neck height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28/400 | 27.1 – 27.6 mm | 1 | short, 9.8 – 10.5 mm |
| 28/410 | 27.1 – 27.6 mm | 1½ | medium, 17.6 – 18.4 mm |
| 28/415 | 27.1 – 27.6 mm | 2 | tall, 27.1 – 27.9 mm |
Your bottle supplier's drawing is the reference; ours is the closure drawing. If you have the bottle drawing, send it. If you have neither, send the bottle; we measure it and confirm the closure before you order.
04 · Which closures fit
On 28/410: VM-01 trigger sprayers (standard closure), VM-02 lotion pumps, VM-05A mist sprayers, VM-G flip-top and disc-top caps.
On 28/400 and 28/415: the same trigger sprayers and lotion pumps with the alternative closure part.
On 20 and 24 mm necks: VM-03 mini triggers, VM-02 and VM-04 lotion pumps (24/410, 24/415), VM-05A mist sprayers, most VM-G caps.
05 · Ratchet and snap-on
A ratchet closure does not screw: it pushes on and locks with teeth. It suits 28 mm necks made for it and is popular for one-way household bottles because the consumer cannot unscrew it. It is not a configurator option; if your bottle needs one, ask for it in the Special build field. The bottle neck must be designed for a ratchet closure; a standard 28/410 thread is not enough.
Not sure which finish you have?
Send the bottle drawing or a photo with a calliper. We confirm the closure before you order.
Have a question that is not here?
My bottle is 28/410 but the closure leaks. Why?
Usually the sealing surface, not the thread: a damaged neck top, a missing liner, or a dip tube that does not reach. Send a photo and the bottle drawing.
Can one sprayer fit both 28/400 and 28/410?
No. The closure part is different. The sprayer engine is the same, so you can order one build with two closures as two items.
